An advanced psychodynamic programme for coaches and facilitators.

Have you ever walked away from a group wondering what on earth just happened?

Perhaps you found yourself working much harder than everyone else. Feeling unusually irritated with one person. Desperate to rescue the group. Strangely incompetent. Bored. Excluded. Or responsible for making everything all right.

Groups create dynamics that no individual member consciously intends, and the facilitator is part of them too.

We often assume that if we understand the individuals, we understand the group. Psychodynamic thinking suggests something different. Groups develop a life of their own. Anxiety, authority, belonging, dependency, rivalry and exclusion begin to shape what happens in ways that cannot be explained simply by the personalities in the room. Learning to think at this level changes how we understand—and work with—groups.

Group Dynamics for Coaches is a new advanced programme exploring the unconscious processes that shape what happens when people come together.

Following the same structure as Essential Psychodynamics for Coaches, this is a taught programme based on learning, discussion and the application of psychodynamic theory. It is not an experiential group relations course, and participants will not be asked to analyse one another or the group they are part of.

We will take familiar psychodynamic concepts into the life of groups, not only in team coaching, but across the many groups we may coach, teach, facilitate, supervise, lead or belong to.

This programme is for you if you are someone who…

  • Works with teams, coaching groups, supervision groups, training groups or leadership groups
  • Notices that a group can behave very differently from the individuals within it
  • Has found themselves pulled into rescuing, controlling, withdrawing or working too hard
  • Wants to understand group behaviour without reducing it to personalities or communication styles
  • Wants a deeper way of understanding what is happening beneath the surface of groups

How you’ll learn:

Learning happens through live teaching, discussion, application and reflection, allowing you to connect psychodynamic theory directly to your own work.

  • Nine live two-hour teaching sessions
  • Theory, discussion and case material
  • Module assignments
  • Follow-up integration session
  • Final case study based on the participant’s own professional work
