Coaching Supervision That Goes Beyond the Basics

Because great coaches don’t work in isolation.

Coaching supervision is becoming more widely recognised as essential. It’s not yet a formal requirement for certification, but more and more coaches value it as an invaluable tool; supporting you, your clients, and the profession as a whole.

In a profession where you’re used to putting others first, supervision gives you space to reflect, reset, and keep your practice sharp.

Why Have Coaching Supervision?

  • Best practice: Reflect on your work (past and present) to maintain and improve your standards.
  • A restorative space: Process strong emotions and separate what’s yours from what’s your clients’.
  • Ethics & safeguarding: Explore and resolve any issues that arise in your work.
  • Boundaries check: Ensure your boundaries are serving you – and your clients.
  • Competence review: Identify when a client’s needs might be better met elsewhere.
  • Ongoing development: Spot gaps in your skills or knowledge and plan to address them.

My Supervision Approach

I draw on multiple approaches – the seven-eyed model, positive psychology, neuroscience, group dynamics, systemic, solution-focused, and psychodynamic supervision.

My focus is psychodynamics. While rooted in therapy, it’s incredibly powerful in coaching supervision. It can highlight resistance and unlock the psychological and emotional shifts needed for sustainable growth.

Themes might include:

  • Transference
  • Countertransference
  • Defence mechanisms

Not every session is purely psychodynamic, but understanding these concepts will help you ask the right questions at the right time.

Mentor Coaching

Mentor coaching is about enhancing your skills and techniques as a coach, often linked to the ICF Core Competencies. It’s a requirement for ICF credentialing and provides a safe, non-judgemental space to reflect on and refine your practice.

The Difference:

  • Mentor Coaching: Focuses on coaching skills and ICF competencies.
  • Supervision: Supports your development by exploring client work, emotional responses, ethics, and boundaries.

As an ICF MCC-accredited coach, I provide mentor coaching for ACC, PCC, and MCC levels.
